U20 Buenos Aires 2018

ABOUT U20

WHAT IS IT?

Urban 20 (U20) is an initiative developed in 2017 under the leadership of the mayor of the City of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, and the Mayor of Paris and Chair of C40 Cities, Anne Hidalgo. Launched on December 12, 2017 at the One Planet Summit in Paris, the initiative is chaired by the cities of Buenos Aires and Paris, and convened by the Climate Leadership Group of C40 Cities, in collaboration with United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).

U20 seeks to coordinate a joint position between the Mayors of the main cities of the G20 and other global urban centers to inform and enrich the discussions of national leaders at the 2018 G20 Summit, to be held in Buenos Aires.

The initiative attempts to raise the profile of urban issues within the G20 agenda and will culminate in the inaugural Mayors Summit in Buenos Aires in October 29th and 30th, 2018. This will be a stepping-stone towards ensuring a dialogue between the U20 cities and the G20.

Urban 20 is composed of 25 global cities: Beijing, Berlin, City of Buenos Aires, Chicago, Durban, Hamburg, Jakarta, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Melbourne, Mexico City, Milan, Montreal, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Sydney, Tokyo, and Tshwane.

WHY U20?

The world today is increasingly urban. In 2010, for the first time in history, the urban population surpassed the rural population -and by 2050 it is estimated that two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities. Transformations generated by urbanization have the potential to boost well-being, resource efficiency and economic growth. However, harnessing these opportunities will be challenging unless cities play a constructive role in the debate.

U20 will work as an inclusive solution to pressing global issues, improving the role of cities and supporting international cooperation and policymaking. U20 seeks to highlight a range of socio-economic and climate change issues in which global cities committed to sustainable economic development can contribute, especially with regard to their experience, needs and solutions to barriers hindering progress.

U20 emerges at a time when cities are playing an increasingly relevant role in responding to several of the current development concerns, and face the challenge of fostering cleaner, more inclusive, and resilient prosperous societies.

About U20About U20

“This is not a minor diplomatic event. Cities will provide the solution to global challenges such as climate change, inequality and joblessness. The vocation of Urban 20 may be the greatest calling of the 21st century”

Edward Glaeser

Professor of Economics, Harvard University
